THE ORIGIN
A Name Born in Darkness
and Wonder
The falls were named by a child. Hilda Curtis — eight years old, rounding up cattle on Tamborine Mountain after school — would sometimes lose her herd in the deep creek forest. By the time she recovered them, the rainforest had turned pitch black. Raised on Grimm’s Fairy Tales, she was certain the dark timber was haunted. She called them Witches Falls, and the name held.
That same landscape — ancient, volcanic, draped in strangler figs, piccabeen palms, and wild orchids — now inspires every bottle we make. We ferment mead the way the mountain carries its stories: slowly, with respect for what came before, and with wonder for what each season will bring.
Witchess Falls Meadery is rooted in the Gold Coast Hinterland’s heritage as a place of artisans, storytellers, and reverent makers. From the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests above us to the local honey producers and native botanists who supply our cellar — every bottle is a place.
